For now, only 3xCF 64mb/128mb/1gb ,transcend 128mb module and a paradies 2Gb-SD.
On two 800xl's "the best" and "the worst"

I did find 1 problem:
Switching to 8bit mode with the new 4.6beta does not work.
I get 32 times "H" on the screen and then it stops trying.
The standard cartridge (no mod) works, also in altirra it works.
But I guess that is not a hardware issue, but a software issue.
Software timing to wait for commands is tricky too :-(

Later!

Hmmmm, perhaps too chearfull too early.

Somehow the IDENTIFY-command ($EC) isn't responded correctly also.
On the standaard unmodified cartridge this is not a problem.

Could still be a programming error in the new 4.6 beta, I didn't find it (yet).

Hi Steve,

Still having problems with the modded cartridge.
What value cap should I take when I want to have the minimum needed delay?
Is 2p2 or 22pF enough or must I increase the value?

Later,
Sijmen.

Why would one command not work and reads/writes do? Or am I not seeing it because there are some hidden retries involved with reads and writes?

I would think you would want to increase the value, but try some smaller values too.

I would also try disconnecting cctrl completely by cutting the trace where it enters the PCB, then reconnecting it with a 33 ohm resistor from the edge connector pad to the cctrl net on the PCB.

I haven't got a clue, been struggling with this for some time now.
Why is the unmodded cartridge OK with this command and the modded not?
The only difference is that the feature-command is one without data-transfer.

I'll dig into it today and hoop to get some answers....

Sijmen.

Ok, update:

The strange feature-error I guess is device dependent.
Real IDE-drives: fine
New CF (40x speed): fine
DOM (Transcend, Simpletech): fine
SD-to-IDE (various brands of 2Gb cards): fine
Old CF (8x speed, 64mb and other small sizes): error

Now back to the soldering-iron and do some cap-changes.

Later,
Sijmen.

Hi Steve,

I need your help.......
So: The problem only is with older CF cards (64mb and 8-speed 128mb).
All other devices (including a 1Gb CF) can be switched 8bit <-> 16 bit without problems.

On the original mod: 330pF is to much, a very small 2.2pF is enough.
I even had good results (some "H" on the screen) with no cap at all.

I did change the setup a bit.
To delay only the signal to the 74LS573 I added a small signal diode.
180pF didn't work in this setup, so I changed it to 22pF (lucky guess I think).
Works 100% on my worst 800XL. No errors with RWCRC.COM.
Even with the unswitchable CF-cards in standaard 16bit modus: no errors!

Perhaps instead of the 74LS573 an 74LS245 for tri-stating the A0-A2 and optionally a small delay is enough to be stable?

Later,
Sijmen.

I have also a strange issue.

I have a 800XE which I upgraded to 1MB, I have random boot when writing.
Another stock 800XE doesn't have this problem.
Also another 130XE, no problem either.

So I figured I'd use this mod.
First I had succes, although after some write attemps same issue.

So I replaced the 220pf with a 100pf.
I know whatever I do, I get red screens on startup.
And then nothing.

I placed the 220pf back, red screen.
I even removed the 573. The only succes I had was to use the Cartridge Studio to rewrite the image.

So, I placed the 573 back with the 220pf.
Connected to Cartridge Studio, but no luck.

I have checked all my connections and they match the images on this forum.
Anyidea's?

regards,
Louis

Sounds like something is heat damaged or shorted. Even with the bus transceiver completely removed, the flash cartridge portion should work properly.

Try removing the 573 and restoring the cartridge to its original configuration to see if it works as before.

So this working setup is with a diode, 74ls573 and a 22pf capacitor?

Not for the 2 mentioned CF cards. (64mb dane-elec / 128mb lexar 8x)
They work normally, but my BIOS can't switch them to 8bit mode.
Don't ask what diode I used.... It's from re-used PCB's and I can't read the -extremely tiny- text on it.

At the moment I'm re-doing the MyIDE configuration-table and layout, just to be sure it's not software-related.
So I can't test again before the beta #5 is compiled and free of bugs.
In the meantime you can use beta #4 for testing overthere.

How about my remark about replacing the 573 by a 245 and tri-stating A0-A2 when crtl is high?

Later,
Sijmen.

I have restored the cartridge and works as before.
I bought five 573's so I will try the others in time

Today I did some more testing:

Replaced the 74LS573 delay to a 74LS244 to tri-state A0-A2 when not used (using cctrl).
That didn't work. Registers readable and setable, but NO I/O possible.
Then I grounded the enable-line on the 74LS244 (so A0-A2 are always 'on').
That didn't work either. Registers readable and setable, but NO I/O possible.

Removed the 244 and put the 573 back.

Still puzzled by the unswitchable CF-cards.
I did find out that after putting the cards into 8bit mode, I only can read the first byte in the IDE-buffer.
I can read zillions of times, I can only get the first byte. After putting the card back to 16bit, I can normally
command a read and cycle 256 bytes out of the IDE-buffer and get a IRQ-done. ?????
(On a unmodded cartridge I/O in 16bit or 8bit mode works perfectly....)

Later,
Sijmen.

Steve, Sijmen,

I have replaced the 573 by another one.
Tried a 220pf, 180pf, 100pf.

I did not noticed an improvement in compatibility, but it also didn't get any worse :P

Ok, I'm pulling an 'Marius' right now.

I wanted to do some more testing with the mod.
But neither the CF-adapter nor DOM worked anymore... A lot of 'H' errors.

So, I reversed all my mod's, replaced some 6502's.
But it still didn't work.
When I removed the SDXint, it didn't even boot correctly anymore.

They only thing I did not reverse was to put but the molex power connector to power the IBM drive.
When I connected that back on the cartridge... the cartridige was 'compatible' again and started right to MyDOS...
