Post subject: How do I make "large" MyIDE volumes? Posted: Mon Aug 08, 2005 8:24 pm |

Hey Everyone,
I'm really excited about getting this MyIDE cart to work.
Thanks to Steve's patience and help, and your posts, I've gotten almost all the way there. I can make partitions on my MyIDE and format them and even transfer files.
I'm having one tiny problem though. I can't figure out how to make a partition with more than 768 sectors on it that MyDOS will recognize. No matter how many sectors I create my partitions with using FDISK.BAS, when I go to MyDOS, it will only format my partition as a 708 sector volume.
So, exactly how can I make bigger partitions and have MyDOS recognize them?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You need to tell MyDOS that your drive is a high capacity drive. Use the 'O' command.
Going from memory you answer:
'Y', drive is configurable.
'Y', drive is high capacity
'65535', number of sectors (or less, depending on your partition, 65535 is the maximum.)
and then you can Initialize the drive and write DOS files too.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help.
Unfortunately, it isn't working.
When I get to DOS, I can do the O-option stuff, but then when I try to (I)nitialize the volume, I get a 163 error (unrecoverable).
The drive is mounted, as I can list its directory. It just won't format.

Hi Marty,
Thanks for your post. I have checked your problem with my 3.5 beta version and all works fine.
Please run SCANDISK.BAS to check if your HD is 100% compatible.
Error 163 is not a report from MyIDE (only error #139), so there must be a problem with DOS and lost data.
I made partition D4: 65535 size DD.
Then reboot the atari (power down/up) to activate the partition just made.
After that you can configure MyDOS using: O 4 N N Y 65535 enter.
Then format drive 4 (this takes a few seconds longer....)
Cheers,
Sijmen.

I finally got this cart to work.
Whew!
After alll of the work it took to get my CF card set up, split into directories, and loaded with my favorite games, I sure wish someone would make a utility that would allow me to back that CF card up! Being able to read/write to it on my PC would be even better. I know I'd pay for utilities like that.
Anyway, thanks to all for their help!

I've got a utility to backup a HD about 75% done. I'm stalled until I pony up the dough to buy a registered copy of APE.

Not everybody has (or wants) a registered version of APE.......
The MyIDE-interface can drive 2 units. So you can copy IDE-0
to IDE-1 if you like. Just set head as $Ax for master and $Bx
for slave. Use the JMP to the read/write vectors.
Perhaps a nice Idea.....

Great suggestion, Sijmen. That would be easy to support as well. Still, I'd like to get the basic backups working so people could transfer them over the net.

Woah! Wouldn't that be sweet! If we could swap and share CF images!
Will your utility let me edit the CF image on the PC? Or, could I at least build the image using a PC-based A800 emulator then transfer that to the CF card?
Bottom line: it would be great to not have to use the Atari hardware to make/edit/copy our CF images.
