Hi,

Does someone can help me regarding my problem ?

First of all i'm using an internal MYIDE + CF/IDE adapter+ CF 32Mb Scandik on my atari 800 XL

Myide Fdisk read as values 490 cylinders /4 Heads/ 1 Sector for my CF.
I make an image first :'1' + enter 'M'
I create a partition 1 : 65535 sector + enter 'D'
Exist + save fonction
Ok ! it's done..

So my problem comes here when i try to transfert mydos.atr by using an internal IDE/CF adapter in my pc with MYIDE2ATR software.
i select the correct drive and i put manualy the same value indicated following up about my CF card.

Mydos is selected and wrote correctly as indicated by the software but when i try to boot it on my ATARI XL by using 'START'+'1' +'B' + Fire/joystick, nothing happen ?

Why ?

i also tried the same with Myidetool and i got the same situation ..

Regards,

Also just for information about my problem

i've also done two things before to write my message :

1 - make an atr file with dos following step by step the paranoid's tutorial and atr2myide for transfering on my CF
the atr file is not correctly created by atr2myide because it gave all the time an SD MD format not readeable format !

2-with emulator, i booted the dos.atr file
i selected "H" + "D1:" + enter key , prompt + "A" Checked the dos.sys and dup.sys are created .. great !

-> atr2myide + manualy entering for my CF 32 Mb ; 4 Heads and 1 Sectors => dos.atr filed is written perfectly on CF !!

So.. on my ATARI : power up + Start + "1" + "B" +fire

=> myide prompt appear and nothing happen ! ?

Could someone can tell me step by step what i got to do or type on my atari to boot it correctly i

Thanks and regards,

This doesn't look correct. 490*4*1 is a total of 1960 sectors, which is 980kB - far from 32MB. A 32MB card should have some 65000 sectors.

You could try plugging the CF/IDE adapter into the IDE port of your PC, enter the Bios and get the (hopefully correct) C/H/S settings from there.

BTW: depending on the exact size of the CF card a 65535 sector partition also might be too large - the first cylinder (0) is reserved for the MyIDE partition table.

so long,

Hias

Hi Hiassoft,

Yes you have right, correct values are 490/4/32 but it still a problem now ? :

When i power up + "start" i got as an example with 60760 sectors ( 490*4*32-1)used for :

001 <CBN>dos
002 <CBN>alley cat
003 <CBN>Bruce lee
and on and on..

if i select 001 +'B' +fire
I got only full lines of "boot error" and that's the same for any kind of file selected.

Why ?

OK, this seems to be more reasonable. But I guess you still got the setup wrong.

In your first post you wrote that you setup the image space with a cylinder high-byte of "1", which means image space starts at cylinder 256 (and extends up to cylinder 489).

Cylinder 0 is used by MyIDE, so you have 255 cylinders * 4 heads * 32 sectors = 32640 sectors free for your partition. So you have to shrink the partition, otherwise it overlaps with image space (you'll overwrite the images if you write something to the partition).

As you configured the image space to support medium (enhanced) density disks, each image slot should take up 9 cylinders (9*4*32 = 1152 sectors each). Therefore you have room for 26 images on your card (490-254 = 234, 234 / 9 = 26).

Could you verify the setup and then post the output of 'myidetool \\.\YourPhysicalDrive -l' (lower case l, that is, to list the partition table)?

so long,

Hias

Hi,

Before to check my setup, do you mean that my partition 1 to declare is not 65535 but 32640 sectors ?

And also in which situation is more interesting to create a medium density disk ?

Yes, exactly. 32640 is the upper limit.

You may of course also create a 720 sector plus a 30000 sector partition (or so), just be sure that the highest cylinder used by partitions is below 256.

I'd say it's best to setup the image space to support medium density disks. Otherwise you can only store single and double density images on your card, but no medium/enhanced density disk images. Unless, of course, you plan to never use medium density images in the image area.

With such a small CF card, you may want to take a serious look at 720 sector images so that you can get more, of course, as Hias said, you won't be able to use a 1040 sector image then (although there are very few really).

Hi everybody,

Thanks for helping me..

First i decided to give up with my 32Mb CF, because it looks deffective and create sometimes strange things !!

So i start from the basic with a Simpletech 128MB CF and the result is different now :

I saved my dos.atr under partion 1 and 2 and when i power up my atari without touching any keys i got full lines with ""boot error" but now with external frame moving all the time.

Here following down what i've done and let me known what i got to do :

Setup screen under 'BYE' : 978/8/32 (values get from Pc bios) ; image=01/05 ; 1S/768 ; 2S/60160

E:\Myidetoolexe>myidetool --list

Image space: first cylinder: 256 cylinders per slot: 5 total slots: 144
partitions: 2 option byte: 00000000 drive bits: 00000011

2 yes D2: 4 239 SD 60160

writing e:\dos\dos.atr to partition 1: 100% OK ( i made the same on partition 2 also !!)

myidetool \\.\physicaldrive2 -L

That is the CF card. Is 124/32/63 the values you are using in fdisk in myide? Looks like you are saying that you are using 978/8/32 instead.

Try 124/32/63 or maybe the card is not compatible.

Hi beamrider,

I've tried with 124/32/63 it was a problem, that was impossible to create any image ! ?

With 978/8/32 i can.

What's your opinion ?

Did you put the CF card in a USB cardreader when you ran myidetool? If yes, you can simply ignore the C/H/S values reported by "myidetool --list", they are generated by the USB driver and have nothing to do with the "real" geometry of your "drive".

Your settings and the output of myidetool look fine, I'm now suspecting it could be a hardware compatibility problem (not all CF cards and flash/hard-drives work with MyIDE). If you have a newer SanDisk CF card (something like 256 or 512MB) you could try it, these cards usually work fine with MyIDE.

I'd suggest you first check if your hardware is fine:

Download "myide 3 setup.zip" from here and run both the "SCANDISK.BAS" and "UNICHK.BAS" programs from the UTIL31.ATR. Run all the tests, including the write tests to be sure your card works fine with MyIDE. Read the softfile-myide.doc for instructions.

If your card passed the read and write tests, start with a very simple setup, just a single 720 sectors (SD or DD) partition at D1:, no image space, and write a known-good DOS Atr to it. This should boot, otherwise the C/H/S settings might still be wrong (check against the values reported by scandisk.bas).

so long,

Hias

Hi Hiassoft,

You said "Did you put the CF card in a USB cardreader when you ran myidetool? "

No i'm using an IDE 40 pin / CF internal PC adapter.

Could you please send me an dos.atr file 100% working well just to start on good base ?

Hi again,

Also one thing i have no floppy drive no more, my last one broke few months ago !!

So how can i use the command run"D1:scandisk.bas" or else if i'm at this time not able to read any atr file with myide / CF card ?

Does exist any issue to boot and run this files my only using IDE/CF adapter and CF card ?

Strange. In this case myidetool should report the correct C/H/S settings (unless your BIOS or some driver remaps the C/H/S settings). Please compare the values with the ones reported by MyIDE fdisk/scandisk.

I've attached an SD and DD (720 sectors) ATR of mydos 4.53/4. Just checked them with my 800XL and they booted fine.
