No, that is correct. This is a limitation due to lack of
programming space. Please read the manual also.

Cheers,
Sijmen.

Thanks for the prompt answers!

I read the manual fully before using. Doesn't everyone? ;-)

It is written:

THE 4.x I/E MyIDE-OS SUPPORTS 3 PARTITIONS ONLY, DO NOT CREATE MORE!
The Flash MyIDE-OS has no limitation in partitions.

I assumed that limitation only applied to a disk-based load of MyIDE-OS. The second sentence seems to indicate that if it is flash-based, then the limitation does not apply. Maybe this should be revised?

Will there be a future version that doesn't have this limitation, or is there any work-around? (maybe loading alternate code from disk?) Did any of the older versions support more? In my configuration, if I could somehow support 6 sixteen-meg partitions, it would enable my entire collection to be living on one CF card, which is pretty cool! Right now, I am using a CF card mounted inside an 800XL, so to change cards I have to remove the case.

I guess a temporary work-around would be to add a hardware switch to bank-select one of 2 CF cards. Would work, Though not as elegant!

Thanks for all your hard work, and enabling my Atari experience to continue! I got my first 400 almost 30 years ago!!! =)

(I sent you a PayPal gift too!)

There's really no reason you can't have more than three partitions on your system at once, although you can only use 3 partitions simultaneously. Just needs software to switch the partitions in and out of the 3 first partition "slots" on the hard drive.

I had a version of my version of MyIDE Config that would do that, but I'm not sure if I released that version or not. I don't think I did, since it complicated the creating and deleting partition code, and I also wanted to remain compatible with Sijmen's tools.

Hi Gas,

Yep, you are right. Sorry about my 'rtm'-remark ;-)

The sentence with flash at that time, referred only to the cartridge+flash.
Later Steve started produce the internal interface with updateable flash-rom.....

The problem with 4.x is that I have coded a space of 24 bytes for partition-buffer some were in <$700 ram.
24 bytes = 8 bytes IDE info and 3x8 byte logical drive info.
(The F-OS uses RAM in OS and has the full 72 byte buffer for 8 partitions)

So what Shawn is referring to, is that although you can have more partitions
on your harddrive and the OS only displays 3, when you know how to read
the partitiontable from IDE and store it in the partitionbuffer you are there.
But forsure I do not recommend tricks/hacks like that since you can distroy data when wrongly done!!!
8)

This is changed in the newer versions and upto 8 drives will become available.

Cheers,
Sijmen.

PS thanks for the donation!
