About the Cleveland Free-NetBorn in 1986 as a project of the Case Western Reserve University School of Family Medicine, the Cleveland Free-Net was a pioneering effort in free community computing. With support and funding from CWRU, CFN grew from a 10 user system to an invaluable service with over 15,000 registered users around the world. CFN provided access to e-mail, library resources, and discussion forums for nearly 14 years before being shut down in September of 1999. Read more about Cleveland Free-Net here. As a leader in community computing and the first 'Free-Net', CFN served as a role model for other free access systems. There are now over 150 Free-Net systems operating around the world.
About the Atari SIGFor 14 years, CFN served as host to one of the worlds longest running and most productive Atari SIGs. With thousands of regularly participating members, this forum accumulated over 120 megabytes of invaluable technical and reference information. A few nights before the Cleveland Free-Net was shut down I made this snapshot of the Atari section. This web site is an attempt to save this material from being lost forever.
Using this ArchiveNearly every byte of material in the original CFN Atari SIG is preserved here. I have also attempted to preserve the original Free-Net menu layouts. All the information has been indexed by a local search engine, which is available for use at the top of every page. If you would like to navigate the original Atari SIG menus, click the GO ATARI link at the top of this page. Other links at the top of this page lead to the various sub-SIGs of the Atari SIG.
