So I just recently picked up an Atari XEGS and I'm looking for the best solution for flashcart. It seems like a MY-IDE2 will do the trick and will work out of the box - I am thinking of picking on up. What file formats do games have to be in? Are .ROM files acceptable? What are the limitations? My goal is to find a setup with the most compatibility.

Thanks!

-John

Compatibility is for most upgrades an issue.
But then, for most issues there is a hacked version to be found.

MyIDE-2 uses FAT32.
ROM files are supported, yes and many more.
Even all -larger- XEGS-roms called R16-files

Most users have enough use of the FAT32-loader that is pre-installed.

For the experienced user, the MyBIOS needs a manual to explain ;-)
That is an enhancement on the operating system with MyIDE-2 usage.
(also pre-installed)

The myide 2 is an excellent choice. I have several of these in use and I own all other possible storage solutions. Thr myide 2 gives an incredible high compatibility rate on stock atari computers.

From all solutions I use the myide 2 the most.

One thing is important to take in mind though. This fine piece of equipment does have a learning curve. It might take some time before you get the maximum out of it.

When you stick to a fat32 partition first and you download the R16 files from this forum you'll be ready to go already.

From that point you could explore and discover more features of the myide.

Have fun!

Thank you for your recommendation and guidance on this. I've still researching sio2sd and sidehd solutions but its likely I'll go with my-ide2.

It depends on what you want though.

There is a very small amount of games that do only run from disk, so then sio2sd would be the better choice.

But MyIDE ][ on the other hand is so much faster, and has the great .r16 compatibility, which gives you a plethora of games that do run on stock atari 8bit. Even a few titles (like the game Commando) that won't run from Sio2SD do run from MyIDE ][.

Perhaps you can name a few titles you absolutely want to play, and then we can say whether it will run on MyIDE ][ or not.
But don't worry, over 99% of the games do run from MyIDE ][.

I also have Sio2SD here, but I love the plug-'n-play MyIDE ][ cartridge, and the speed.
Someone (I believe it was Larry) calls the MyIDE ][ a swiss army knife. He is right.

I totally agree with the guys "above". I own a Sio2sd as well as
a MyIde 2.
Although I' m a Commodore Fan, I prefer now
the Atari. The reason is the hardware already mentioned.
I have to add, that i started with the MyIde2.
But if you're digging deeper, you probably want to have
a Sio2Sd too.
AAAnd... If you want to spend even more money,
I suggest an Ultimate 1MB Ram expansion.
So, now you know my whole equipment ;)

You may start with the MyIde. It is really compatible
with almost everything.
You can serve the CF with your PC, and only use
the FAT32 feature. If you are more experienced,
you HAVE TO use it's ability as a Atari "harddisk".
