Hi,

I have tested my 8Mbit flashcart on a 130XE and it won't see the cartridge at all.

Other 130XE systems do work, so the problem should be with this particular 130XE.

I tried to replace the CO14806 and the CO21598.
Just because they were closest to the cartridge port, not because I understand it.

The CO14889 was already socketed, so I replaced that one too.
But alas... no results.

The 1Mbit cartridge does work...
What else could I try to replace?

regards,

Louis

Do other cartridges work properly on this computer?

The maxflash cartridges use the o2 clock line of the cartridge port, but most rom cartridges do not. If this were disconnected it might cause ROM cartridges to work, but flash cartridges to not work.

Another thing to test is to make the cartridge blank by erasing it in the maxflash studio. Then insert the blank cartridge and boot the disk image below to see if it recognizes it.

Thanks for your quick response.

The test-utility says "Unable to detect flash cartridge".

Some games I tried, gato, joust, final legacy.
The 1Mbit is recognized, that is the strange part.
Even the MyIDE+Flash is recognized.

On this PCB I had connected a 320KB memory upgrade.
I've reversed the proces, so it should be an original PCB again.

Where can I find the o2 clock line, and where is it running to?

Sorry, I was mixed-up.

The MyIDE+Flash is not working.
It generated a scrambled image.
Shift-Ctrl-TAB is still working though...

Ok, this is weird.

The MyIDE+Flash does boot, with scrambled screen.
It probably comes up with the flashmenu.

Because pressing 3 brings up the "EXE loader".
After this, the cartridge is running ok.

Some weird thing are going on with this PCB...

This is what I see when the MyIDE+Flash is plugged in.
I assume the MyIDE+Flash and 8Mbit cartridge is related...

What I already replaced:

CO14806
CO21698
CO14889
CO14795
CO12294
74LS74AP (beside the basic/os)
74LS08 (between CO14795 and CO12294)
CO25953

The PCB is a 130XE REV-4

Does the RAM test pass on this machine if you let it run to the end?

If you use the test program to erase and program a test image to the 1mbit cartridge, is it successful in this 130xe?

The memory-test passed. All blocks were green.

The 1Mbit cart was succesfully erased.
"Verifying chip is properly erased.
Flash erase succesfull."

btw. The other options on the test utility state:
"You need at least 48k ram".

Isn't that odd?

Sounds like you do have a RAM problem.

The you need 48k message is only displayed if there is no RAM at $9FFF.

Every 48k or greater Atari has RAM there, but there are a few possibilities.

1) The Atari thinks a 'right' cartridge is inserted in the 8000-9FFF area.

This could happen due to a defective MMU, a bad connection from the MMU to the cartridge port, or by a broken trace on the PCB.

If there is something jammed in the cartridge port or one of the pins is bent on the underside of the PCB, this could also cause it.

2) Bad RAM or RAM decoder circuit

You could try going to BASIC without a cartridge inserted and doing "PRINT FRE(0)".

If it is less than 37902, then the boot time memory test is detecting less than 48k of base RAM.

You can also do "PRINT PEEK(5)" which should display the high byte of the MEMLO that was detected at startup. For a 48k/64k machine this should be 160. (A0)

I can only boot to BASIC without the 1Mbit cartridge.
Without the cartridge the computer behavious normally and outputs 37902 (fre) and 160 (peek 5)

With 1MBit cartridge the memory is less, boots directly to SELF TEST and the testcart RAM test gives errors.
With 8Mbit cartridge the computer doesn't see it at all.
With MyIDE+Flash, computer starts up with scrambled screen. testcart RAM test is OK

MMU has changed replaced by another CO61618 (from an 800XL Freddy)
No results.

I have checked the cartridge port and all the pins are connected.
None bend.

So that probably means I have to replace RAM.
Could such a problem easily be comming from a broken condensator, or resistor?

Or should I just use this board without cartridges? :P

Again thanks for your help Steve!!

The problem is FIXED! :D

You will not believe this.
After soldering the basic, some memorychips and the Freddy. I was done.
I could not guess what the problem was.

Then I was staring at the PCB, looking for bad traces...

I found two resistors which pins were solder together.
Compared them with another PCB, and that was not supposed to be!

I removed the extra solder... problem fixed!

Steve again thank you!

regards,

Louis
