Hi everyone, I have a working/SALT tested Atari 800 48K and two new MaxFlash 8mbit cartridges. From what I gather reading the forums (now), multicart images won't work on an unmodified Atari 800 48K (whether <48K ROM, .exe or .xex) due to paging limitations? I can get individual 8K cartridge ROMS to work if I copy over ~10 copies of a single game to an individual MaxFlash, and that's fine by me as a workaround. But I was wondering if I understand the limitations correctly (I'm going off mainly forum answers to 400 users), or whether someone with an original, unmodified Atari 800 48K has a MaxFlash image that works for them or advice on making workbooks or modifications. Thank you! MJC

You need 64k to be able to load other then 8k .rom files.

Yes I understand that, but I should be able to make an 8K rom multicart, correct? All I can get working is a single ROM copied multiple times and am just wondering if that's all that works on an original 48K 800. Thanks!

Yes, you are correct.
On the 400/800 with no extra (16k) RAM in the OS-region you can only make compilations of 8k ROMs. That is what you have, so NO support for exe and atr loading, for as I know.
All 8k ROMs should work.
Perhaps the one or two odd ones out, that interfere with the bankswitching of the maxflash need to be a patched version. I and others made some of these and uploaded them on the forum. From my head, fort apocalypse and gyrus need to be patched.
Grtz, Sijmen.

Got a question, I tried making a new multicart too and it won't load the xex files on my Atari 800 48k so I did a search and got here. So it looks like all I can do is 8k ROM files? I do have an older Yellowman's Shooter Cart that seems to work fine on my Atari 800,and wanted to make my own and it won't work. Why is that the case?

I FIGURED OUT THE ISSUE!
I have some older clear 8MBit carts and some recent ones I bought a few years ago. The OLD ones, with the sockets for the PLCC chips on the back WORK on the Atari 800! The newer ones, without sockets. DO NOT WORK. Only on XL/XE. Hmmmm
Are we hosed going forward for the Atari 800? I will email Steve and ask about this and if I can buy some older ones.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't know the newer have issues on the older 400/800 hardware. Good idea to inform Steven.
