I have a 42-year old AI program I wrote called Superlearner that now exists only on paper and on the Atariage forum here: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/34813 ... 00-1450xld
Is it possible to hook my Atari 800 + Atari 810 disk drive up to the internet and download the file into BASIC to run and save to the 810 floppy driver? I'd rather buy the interface and download it than type the 7-page intricate code.

Do you have any SIO-to something device?
That is needed to transfer anything digital to the atari.

Not yet. I want to buy the right thing and the right software to go with it.
My goal is to transfer the code from my Apple laptop to the Atari 800 (not XL, just the regular 800) through the SIO interface connected to the 810 drive through its input port, then save it to floppy on my 810 drive, then, somehow, read the code back to BASIC with DOS loaded and run it on the Atari.
That's a lot of pieces to coordinate.
I need a list of what to buy and where.

Very tricky....
Why not use an emulator on you laptop.
Now a days, I am used to use Altirra for these difficult tasks.
When done, create a "diskette" file to be used with for example my SIO2SD

Alternatively, if I have time, upload your basic program here, what is stored on your laptop.
And I have a look.
Preferred in ASCII

I started typing in the 7-page code already and have typed in the first 3 pages. I hope to type in the rest today (since the heat wave is keeping me indoors anyway).
I uploaded the code with a .txt extension and the full documentation with code too in txt format to save space under your 2MB limit.
It's also on the Atariage forum at https://forums.atariage.com/topic/34813 ... 0-1450xld/
I have an Atari 1050 but if I can get this run I might be interested in an Atari compatible small (emphasis on small) printer too if you have that. I had an Epson printer when I originally wrote this in 1984 so some printer specific codes are embedded into the code which are hard to decipher now since the printer itself reinterpreted them when it printed the code. I'm leaving those embedded " " parts of the code blank now and hoping it still runs without that but there may also be some POKE commands that aren't clear from the printout either for the same printer compatibility reasons. I still have my original Atari manuals plus my 1050 manual, but it's not clear to me after 40 years what I was trying to do with these special codes that are in a few places.

Thank you for looking at this.

I tried loading it, but the bas file has many errors, atari-basic will not load it.

Might have been a bad file. This one seems to be better formatted.
I started typing it in but lost it all when something happened to the floppy disk.
The BASIC interpreter didn't flag me with anything like you're getting and I was able to get as far as the menu and built-in demo before other logic errors not caught by the interpreter started giving me errors, or just weird screen output.
But then I lost everything due to disk failure. I don't want to retype it all.
If you can RUN the file, then show me how to transfer it to my own Atari, including whatever I have to buy to do it, that would be great. Thanks.

Ok, that loads fine.
I translated it to an atari-EOL file (a listed file), so you can load it as text in any editor.

Like I said, I use altirra, for me the best atari emulator.

I configured a device H: to be the download folder on my PC.
(Were the tranlated file is, saved as super.lst)
In drive D1 I have a DOS (in this case, my own version)
Basic C as cartridge.

Then I simply load the file by ENTER"H:SUPER.LST"

----

To load it on a real Atari, you can use the SIO2PC-interface and APE-software (atari perhipital emulator) running on the PC.
In APE:
Put a DOS.atr in slot D1:
Mount the download folder in slot D2: (there is a limit to 128 files in a mounted folder, so be sure to have less, otherwise ape does not "see" it).
On ATARI, boot with basic.
Then load the program using ENTER"D2:SUPER.LST"

But nowadays there are many other ways to do this.
FujiNET for example let you use Micro-SD and a Network environment.
This is still untouched grounds for me.

You have some work to do I see....

In the setup I used, I can simply edit and then SAVE or LIST the program to D1:
Virtual Floppy drive errors on the PC to an ATR-file, won't happen.

Also, not sure what went wrong here, since I do not see a line 35 in your pdf.

https://youtu.be/VPr2p0Xs3U8

No, converted file looks fine to me.
Most likely a typo in the file, making basic to interpret it as a line 35 and puts that in.

For working on the atari (or emulator), you can abuse assembler editor to work on the listed file.
The cartridge sees it as text and keeps it this way.
Basic has the behavior to load listings and the stores it tokenized in memory.
With the editor, you can ENTER and LIST the file from and to disk.

So, enough for me today, talk to you later.

One more :-)

Found the error.
Line 1035 is miss-typed as 035.

How odd. It's correct in the Superlearner.BAS.txt file I originally sent you, but not in the Superlearner.BAS-.txt file I sent you later.

In any case, I didn't get the error you got when I ran the version I typed from my original article in PDF form which I can't upload here b/c it's over the 2MB limit.

Any progress in running a emulator or SIO2something device?

I'm having trouble identifying the pieces I have and pieces I need.
I have:
1. A free Ethernet RJ-45 port in the back of my TV FIOS set top box. I assume it's output, not input, but it really doesn't say anything about I/O and the short instructions don't either. I plugged a spare RJ-45 in there, but...
I need:
2. An SIO converter to get Ethernet signals into my Atari 800. Can this go into the second SIO in the back of my Atari 1050 so I don't have to give up the drive when using the SIO converter to get onto the internet? And if so, will the SIO connected to the set top box even get the Atari onto the internet, even if I need...
3. An emulator on the Atari that can connect to the internet without a Windows PC connecting first in a chain, which I don't have. I do have two Apple laptops, but they don't have RJ45 ports anyway and besides, they are probably useless to the Emulator, right?
Alternately, if the Atari emulator can connect to a device that connects to the internet over my home wireless connection, like the Apple laptops do, that could work. Is there anything like that that can connect to an Atari SIO or converter to cable compatible with the device? I could buy the 3: converter SIO -> cable -> wireless internet device.
4. Even if I can make all these connections physically, can I:
5. Download the Superlearner program from a Dropbox drive Google drive? Downloading from the Atari Age listing won't work unless I can upload a working code txt file there too that doesn't include the manual, but I don't know if the Emulator will read it as text and not an image. How did you do it?
6. Save it so that once I leave the Emulator I can go into BASIC and load it from the 1050 as a .BAS file (guess it'll have to be converted to a .BAS file from a .TXT file somehow first).
7. Run it. Even with text misreadings like you got for a misnumbered line, there'll be problems with the special character commands that were for the printer. It will run without those but there may be others that are not printer specific but were printed out by the printer in a way I can't reverse-translate now. It'll probably still run, but with some limits, I think.

I would suggest a SIO2SD device.
That emulates disk-drives for the Atari and works with SD.
The disk-files called atr, you can manipulate on your apple. I don't have, so you have to dig into this yourself.
At the other hand, I can make workable ATR's for you to work with.
The SIO2SD then replaces your real 1050 or 810 drive.

Alternatively, an Atari-FujiNET device.
That is more complicated, has WiFi to connect to the internet and also a MicroSD-slot to emulated disk-drives using ATR-files
