Seriously considering getting one of these.

What I would like to know....If you have f.i. a 256 MB Transcend card, the entire space will (can/must) be divided into 16 MB drives. Now when you boot up, how do you select between which one to boot. F.i. if I have 10 bootable floppy images there, can I get a a list with names ? (so I don't have to memorize what is on all those sections).

How much is the "required" size of the card ? I mean, is more than 256MB actually any sense at all ?

Sorry, I'm an experienced A8 user and came up to the APE solution where my old PC used to "serve" my XE but I left the "scene" from that time.
Recently bought a XEGS and would love to have LOADS of games on it ready to play ;)

For loading standard floppies from IDE, you can use the image-mode.
This is a special mode where the IDE is a single diskdrive containing 1 "disk"
You can access this disk plus the next 7 (for multi disk games).
Image-space is reserved above the partition space and can spend from cylinder 256 until the end of the drive.
On a 256Mb card this would be aprox. 370 disk-images.

The default mode is partition-mode, where you can assign up to 8 logical drives.
Size between 720 sectors and 16Mb. Rarely users configure 8 drives.....
Most common is D1:720SD/Dx:16Mb.
Below the 256 cylinder there is aprox. 32Mb of room on a 256Mb card.

Please checkout the manual in the manual post.

Sijmen.

Edit by classics:

XEGS:
This interface has a slightly different design to fit in the casing.
The GAL-interface sees the XEGS and addresses 2 extra 8k rom spaces
to include for example BASIC and MISSILE COMMAND.[/quote]

How do I use this #1 jumper? I have tried to reflash with a new file, and program crashes, flashing does not even start. I have done this once before to put River Raid in place of Missile Command. Now I want to replace River Raid and intall Xegs43i with a modified 43i with 'Hais HiSio version 1.20'. ???
TIA

Another quick note...........
I changed all this and put the normal XEGS ROM back in/River Raid, and /Atari basic rev'c', because I got tired of not being able to use Turbobasic with the MyIDE setup. But I still can't use Turbobasic with the new setup. Would there be anything that you can think of with this internal OS to lock out Turbobasic.. 'Loads to the ready prompt and then crashes..........needs a restart to get back to MyDos or Spartados boot disk.'

"On a 256Mb card this would be aprox. 370 disk-images."

Does this mean that by using an old 2.5 inch form factor 10 Gig drive I can effectively store all of the atari eight bit archives? images of cartridges etc..
Can you direct me to a FAQ on MyIDE, capabilities, file formats, ATR images.. Sorry so vague but I have been looking at turning an Xl into a collection of old atari software that I have.

I can look up the stats on the hdd to figure out the path to take.

Thanks, Douglas

Here is the link to the (technical) manuals:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=490

10Gb would be around 2.5Gb in atari-size 128b/sector usage.

here is a walk through of what I think i am supposed to do..

the drive has heads : 16
sec : 63
cylin: 16383

so one cylinder = (16*63)...> 1008 sectors

a 1040 would be ... 3 cyl = 3024 which would be a loss of 1984
a 720 would be.. 2 cyl = 2016 which would be a loss of 1296

and a 65535 = (128 * 1008) + 1008 ....> 130032

taking (1008*16383) = 16514064 free sectors - 258048(start point)
giving (16256016/130032)...> approx 125(65535 sized units)

Hmm.. I wonder if I am in the right ballpark..

Let see,

First cylinder is for FDISK
next 255 cylinders are reserved for logical partitions minimum.

So for images you have 16383-256=16127 usable cylinders.
In default 1040 mode (atari medium density) this is 16127/2=8063 images
In 720 mode (atari single density) this is 16127/1=16127 images

For the logical partitions you have 255x1008=257040 sectors in any density you want to use.
This is almost four 16Mb DD-partitions.

Most common is to setup D1 as 720 sector SD, this is your standard boot drive.
Then D2 as 16Mb DD-partition, this will satisfy most of your needs.
It's best to use a small D1 for rescue purposes. MyDOS can be flacky from time to time ;-)
Rest of the space are images.
About 8000MD or 16000SD

Install questions.. I hope I have installled it correctly and I am afraid to turn it on at the moment.

1200XL My Ide interface

It seems that the power jumper needs to stay in place. I was concerned as I didnt see an actuall DRIVE install manual and I thought that might be for my hard drive I will be installing.

I am under the impression that I will need to squirell out a 5V supply for my hard drive but otherwise I would like to turn it on to see if my system is running without the drive installed.. baby steps..

I hope this is not miscatagorized

Hi Douglas,

The power jumper is for CF, DOM or other IDE-modules. (it sends out 5 volt on pin 20).

For real HD-drives you need to tap 5 volt from your 1200XL-PCB or use a separate PSU.
There is no need for an extra PSU when using the small 2.5" IDE-drives.
(Your atari-PSU can power the XL and drive)

You can powerup without drive, no problem.

No idea, sorry. I'm not familiar with 1200XL.
Better ask Steven Tucker.
Sure you have this link:

Use BYE to enter fdisk.
Init, create D2:, exit.
Reboot, check if D2 is present, format and write dos to it.
BYE again, change D2: to D1:, exit.

Don't got a manual or link for downloading one with the kit?

A little De ja Vue
I am back..

Well after a few years hiatus, tried to get the thing up and running again.

No joy. I have a black screen

I Removed the IDE card and restored to original but now I have a Green Screen, which is where I was last time but in reverse order.

I am glad I have a fresh motherboard in the mail.

I am sure we can get this up and running eventually...
