Yes, it can. But you can't remove it from the system.
It's inside the 32k OS-ROM and also hardwired to the PIA/MMU.
This OS rom contains 8k basic / 8k missile command (switchable) and 16k OS.
So as soon as a program sets the missile-command PIA-bit it's switched on.
(and the internal basic disabled)

Cheers,
Sijmen.

Good, when I get to it, I'll have the XEGS OS update that you have without the game.

When you look at the XEGS rom it's content is:

0000-1FFF bank #1 Missile Command
2000-3FFF bank #2 BASIC
4000-7FFF bank #3+4 XEGS-OS

You can burn a new 32k EPROM with any 8k ROM image instead
of the first 2. Be sure the XEGS-OS is in bank 3+4.

Now:
When you boot the XEGS with keyboard, it selects bank #2 BASIC
Hold SELECT to boot with bank #1
-or-
When you boot the XEGS without keyboard, it selects bank #1 Missile Command
Hold SELECT to boot with bank #2

Default for the XEGS-OS it to look for a keyboard. If no keyboard
is present, it acts as a game-console and boots the game. With
keyboard is acts as a computer and boots basic. Holding SELECT
will select the other default option. Ofcourse holding OPTION will
deselect bank #1 or #2 totally.

Cheers,
Sijmen.

You know what would been cool if Atari had gave the XEGS a splash screen some thing the 1200XL. I was just looking at conversion roms from the 5200 I see that Meteorites can fit in place of Missile Command
it's only File size: 7778 bytes 8)

Is there someone here who knows how to 'downgrade' an XEGS to a NORMAL XE computer?

I guess one should use another MMU?

And I guess some rewiring.

I hope someone knows the exact build-description to do this.

Thanks
Marius

The XE-GM1 http://gury.atari8.info/details_hardware/496.htm makes it more like a 130XE but you then all you have is the buggy XEGS OS to work with.

Just burn a 32k eprom as discribed above and replace the XEGS-OS
by the standard OS. That's all. If you want, you can put assembler
in the other 8k. When needed, you only have to program pia-B6 to
switch between the 2 romsets.

Cheers,
Sijmen.
