I have assumed that you can flash *any* compatible (XL,XE,800) OS to the interface memory -- not just a new MyIDE OS. Is that correct?
Of course, if you flash a non-MyIDE OS then the HD won't work, but its still important for compatibility or if you want to use something like the Omnimon monitor (and can boot from a floppy/image).

Yes, any 16k OS ROM image will work.
