Hi,
I recently got a 1200xl with the 32os Mod, 256 Ram upgrade and clearpic Mod. Everything is good untill I plug in the Atarimax MyIDE cartridge. After about 15 minutes it starts getting odd characters on the screen, and then the computer locks up. Reboot or coldstart bring everything back again until it locks up again. The computer is hotter that I have ever notice in the past or without the MyIDE cartridge. I do have the 20 Pin mod on the cartridge.

My questions are:

Is this lockup caused by overheating?
Is the computer salvagable to still use the cartridge?
Are there instructions for replaceing power components available?

Maybe I could add on a external powered cooling fan. I could go back to external power for the cartridge, but I would rather replace older components with newer components if I could get a listing of items to beef up the power components.

TIA

Well, I suppose it could be power related. Does turning off the unit and letting it cool off make the problem go away longer than just pressing reset?

Hi Roy,

Good question. I think it's not related to the cartridge.
I have a standard 1200XL and use it often for longer periods of time
for testing new MyIDE-software.
There has never been a problem with heat or lockups at my place.

Cheers,
Sijmen.

I've had similiar weird problems with my 800XL, with a bunch of upgrades:

32-in-1 OS
256k memory
MyIDE w/ CF card
SIO2PC (powered from Atari)

It's definitely power related in my case.

Well if I reboot the freeze and crash happen approximatle in the save amount of time. But a cold start seems to crash quicker. I will do some timings with a clock to verify the duration before crash..
Thanks for the feedback..

Hi Roy-

I've seen this also, when using a 32-in-1 OS, 256/320K memory, and a Black Box on the PBI. Here are some things to consider...

Can you power the MyIDE with an external supply for test?

What is your +5VDC output voltage under load at the voltage regulator?

Can you swap out the cpu to see if the problem changes?

Have you read Bob Puff's StableXL? I've never done this with a 1200XL, but have needed it with a couple of XE's and 800XL's. Read it here:
http://www.nleaudio.com/css/Files.htm

If you substitute a regular single eprom/rom for the OS module, does the problem go away?

Good luck!

OK I did change my CF adapter for one that is not 20 pin powered and connected external power. All the crashes and sparkles on the screen have gone away, but 1200xl still runs warm.

During the timed testing for a crash, I was never able to detemine any reason for any specific duration.. [very sporatic]..

I converted the non 20 pin power CF adapter to powered 20 pin, and still everything is good no more crashes.

Conclusion is I had a bad or shorted CF adapter.

Check your CF-adaptor for the 3.3 or 5 volt jumper? Must be set
at 5 volt operation.

As for the 1200XL, a heavily modded system needs more then
1.5 amp (that is the standard rating of the atari PSU). If you draw
more than this the power will drop or become instable.

In cases like this, I use a PSU from a PC-casing. The RED wire
is 5 volts and can supply 15 amps easily. This will solve your
crashing problems for ever. Also this 5 volt is 100% clean.

As for heat, that will not change. The 6502 CPU (clocked at 1.8Mhz) is
itself a mayor heat source. The expensions will generate the same
amount of heat. In time of winter a nice hand-warming device :-)

Cheers,
Sijmen.

I also have the 1200XL 32 in one problem... Exactly the same as described above.

I have done step 1 of the Stable XL mod, (jump 2 pins on the LS08 chip), as well as eliminate 1 gate on R/W in the LS08 to make it the same as the 800XL. That had the added side effect of fixing the TextPro inverse video bug, and, it lets me use that gate for the EXTSEL line for my PBI.

I have not done step 2 of Stable XL, which would probably help, because I use the unused gate of the LS14 to flip the bit on my Newell board to make it RAMbo compatible.

MyIDE cart works perfectly with standard XL/XE OSRAM chip.

I am still having a problem with KMK/JZ/IDEa PBI device. I am going to replace all the 74LSxx chips with 74HCxx and see if that helps.

KMKDIAG.COM reports errors in the ROM on the device. I will try it on a 130XE, and if same errors occur, I will return the device for a new one. If not, I will keep looking for timing problems.

Right now, my 1200XL is set up just like an 800XL by the schematic. It should work.

Please let me know if anyone has any ideas.

You added the PBI to your 1200XL for the KMK/JZ adapter, or this is a different computer? Supposedly, the KMK/JZ only works on XE series. (?)

Interesting.... I didn't know it was only for XEs. The only difference that I can see is that the R/W line on the XE cart port is used, instead of the Latched R/W on the XLs. I connected it to the cart. port to test it, so I should have had the same R/W as the XE.

I'll do more reading and testing. Pictures to follow when it's done.
