Hello,

I wonder where the documentation of the MyIDE-Flash-Cartridge can be found. The corresponding link on this page is broken:
Complete, official MyIDE and MyIDE+Flash Documentation, Manuals and Software at Mr. Atari's Web Site

Especially I want to know the following:
1) How many ATR-Single-Density-90KB-Images can I store on my 512 MB CF? It has $3E1 cylinders, $10 heads, $3F sectors giving a total of $F45F0 sectors.
2) Can I make backups of a MyIDE-CF with a PC-CF-Reader?

I dont have an updated link, hopefully Sijmen can let us know where it went though. :D

On the CF backup, the files are not stored in any format that a PC utility would recognize.

To make a complete backup of the card you would need a utility that can make a sector for sector clone of the card, and not care if there is no partition table, etc.

I haven't tried it but a utility like Acronis true image or Norton Ghost might be able to do it.

On linux im guessing that you could use dd to just dump the whole device to a file.

If you start your image space at cylinder 256, you would have 737 cylinders for storing images (using Sijmen's image manager) and each image would take 2 cylinders (16 x 63 = 1008, but each image needs 1040 sectors, so two cylinders per image.) So a total of 368 images can fit on your CF card if I've figured it out properly.

I'm sorry. I have removed all MyIDE-software from my homepage for
the timebeing. There are rumours to sell a copycat MyIDE for cheap
and use my software to run it......

Ok. About images. With the new fdisk you can force the image manager
to 720 sectors/image, so use only 1 cylinder each image!
Then you can double the images and still use 1008 sectors if needed.

Thanks for your reply.

So I can put 737 90KB-Images on the CF (formerly 368). I. e. only 737 * 90KB = 64.8 MB of the CF are used  What is with the rest of the space (447 MB)?

Of course, it will take some time to write 737 Images to the CF, so this will be sufficient for a while

Hi Sijmen,

How does this work? I'm guessing that your fdisk program just calculates the cylinders per image based on 720 sectors instead of 1040. I'll have to add this option to my programs as well. It's a good option for people who won't be using MD disks I suppose, and cuts down on wasted space.

Dude, that sucks! You are basically giving it away for free as it is, and you deserve the recognition for your hard work.

MyIDE is only 8 bit bytes, while IDE-units use 16 bit words.
So you can only use 50% of the IDE-unit.

Beside that, IDE uses 256 word/sector storage, so if you use only 128 bytes
of them, you drop down to 25% effective usage.

:o

But then, you have plenty of room left for your little A8-computer!

A 'cheaper' clone - I paid like $30/$40 for MyIDE - who would think that making one for cheaper would make them any $$$ at all.....

lame........

Keep up the good work Mr. Atari :)

Yes, that's right.

It might seem like wasted space, and it is, but the image system that Mr. Atari uses is easy and straight-forward. Personally, when you can buy a 1GB CF card for $50.00, I don't really care that I am losing some space.

I'm currently working on such a tool for Linux and Win32 (Windows 2000/XP). It will work with directly attached harddrives and with CF-cards in an (USB-) cardreader.

You'll be able to back up partitions and images to individual ATR files and also copy ATR files directly to MyIDE partitions and to image space. Plus, there's a "backup all" feature that will dump all active partitions to "partitionX.atr" and all images with a name to "image name.atr".

Lateron I plan to also add partitioning functionality so that you'll be able to completely set up a MyIDE harddrive on your PC.

So far I ran some tests under Linux and just half an hour ago I had the first successful test with my 512MB Sandisk CF card in an USB cardreader in Win2k :-)

I did an small program that work in Windows for insert ATR files into an dump of an initialized Compact Flash with MyIDE Fdisk, and the Image-Loading activated.(also should to work with Hard Disk)
You should to use some software for dump the Compact flash with USB card-reader. And with my program I insert into this dump all ATR files that I want(it takes few seconds). The files names are inserted too(MyIDE OS 4.2). Then I return the dump to the Compact Flash.
This work perfectly for my. I hope that will be useful for you.

note: all previous images(not inserted with my program) into "image-loading" are erased. The partitions are not modified.
I have tested only with MyIDE OS 4.2
Later I plan to add direct access to Compact Flash.

Cool! All this development for MyIDE is great. MyIDE was really missing some PC-side utilities.

Great work Hias, I'm very very impressed!

This will be a super tool for all MyIDE-users

:D

Cheers,
Sijmen.

Hello,
I uploaded a new version of ATR2MyIDE, now you can directly access a harddrive or Compact Flash connected to your PC(IDE or USB) for write ATR files to MyIDE image-disk space.
:!: Be careful, you could write data to the wrong drive. :!:

Is important that you confirm the number of sectors, heads and cylinders, specially if you use CF card in an USB card reader/writer.

cheers,
Nachocientos.
