Well....I've lurked for a bit now. I have my sio2pc adapter, my 1mb flash cart, and my 8mb flash cart.
I've read the instructions on how to make flash images, and how to make a multicart.
But I cant understand or otherwise figure out how to do one myself.

Would someone be so kind as to list step by step exactly how to make flash images and a multicart?

Plweeze ?

Don't feel bad, I am in the same position. I've read and read and I am really not technical-minded and was hoping to convert a few games of my own. No problem with the already made posted images. But, HOW do you use the utilities to make a brand new flashcart image? What do you run them in? Please let us know, thanks!!!

Well, maybe it would help if we go through it one step at a time? :D

Do you already have Perl installed on your computer, or have you installed it?

If you are running Windows you can download and install Perl here:

http://downloads.activestate.com/Active ... 148120.msi

After you have that installed let me know, we can move on to the next step. :)

Ok if you go to a command prompt and enter:

Yeah, something like that came up...although something didnt install right since I had to switch to that specific directory where the perl file was to get it to do what you said. It wont work from any prompt...
But (I think) it worked.... :?

Sounds like that directory where perl.exe is located is not included in your system PATH statement.

The Perl installer should do that, but its something you should fix before going on or you will have trouble executing the script.

If you are using XP you can edit your PATH statement by going to Start->Control Panel->System->Advanced Tab->Enviroment Variables Button

Then click the PATH entry and EDIT. You will have to add the location of the perl.exe file to the end of your path, each path is seperated by a semicolon.

So it might look like:

C\Windows\System32;C:\Program Files\Adobe Acrobat;C:\Program Files\ActivePerl\bin\

After thats set if you launch a new shell you should be able to type perl -V from any directory and have Perl working properly. :D

Kinda strange the installer didnt do it for you. :(

I played around with things, and found the installer *did* in fact add the perl/bin directory to my autoecex.bat file, but for some reason it does not recognize it. It is probably because I am running Windows 98 on my main PC, and maybe the way the installer adds the command line just isn't recognized.
I'll play around with it some more, or I can always just type "set path=c:\perl\bin" from the dos prompt when I used the program (I did try that and it worked fine) or if I'm feeling fancy I can edit a batch file to do that for me.

Anyways, I think I'm ready for the next step.

Sweet, with Perl working we can install the TASM assembler, this is used to build your cartridges from the maxflash source code.

This is pretty easy, you just need to download and unzip it to a directory.

You can download it directly here:

http://www.atarimax.com/flashcart/download/tasm32.zip

Unzip that to a directory on your hard disk, for example you could use C:\TASM. The directory should look like this after installation:

C:\TASM>dir
Volume in drive C has no label.
 Volume Serial Number is E0D4-B96D

 Directory of C:\TASM

Ok, were rollin now. :)

Now you can download and unzip the maxflash source code and build scripts.

You can get these in this forum posting:

http://www.atarimax.com/flashcart/forum ... .php?t=249

(They are also linked in the Maxflash documentation)

Just unzip that file to a directory of your choice, say C:\maxflash

After unpacking, the directory should look like this:

C:\maxflash>dir
Volume in drive C has no label.
 Volume Serial Number is E0D4-B96D

 Directory of C:\maxflash

07/07/2005  11:47 PM    <DIR>          .
07/07/2005  11:47 PM    <DIR>          ..
07/07/2005  11:47 PM    <DIR>          flash
07/07/2005  11:47 PM    <DIR>          myide
07/07/2005  11:47 PM    <DIR>          osb
05/14/2005  04:02 AM    <DIR>          xlos
05/14/2005  04:00 AM            24,746 exepmenu.a65
05/14/2005  04:00 AM             4,902 exeunpak.a65
05/14/2005  04:00 AM            17,571 maxdisk.a65
05/14/2005  04:00 AM            17,693 mdskmenu.a65
05/14/2005  04:00 AM             4,536 mempack.a65
05/14/2005  04:00 AM             6,076 multidsk.a65
05/14/2005  04:00 AM             5,832 softdisk.a65
05/14/2005  04:01 AM               532 maxflash.cfg
05/14/2005  04:05 AM            46,988 maxflash.pl
05/14/2005  04:01 AM            18,349 license.txt
              10 File(s)        147,225 bytes
               6 Dir(s)  102,388,674,560 bytes free

C:\maxflash>

Once you have that unzipped correctly, we need to tell the maxflash scripts where to find the TASM assembler. For that, open the maxflash.cfg text file in any text editor, it will look like this:

##
## MAXFLASH TASM CONFIGURATION FILE
## Names and values in this file must be seperated by a colon and must not span more than one line.
##

##
## Define the location of the TASM assembler (version 3.2 recommended) here.
##
TASM LOCATION       : E:\tasm32\tasm.exe
TASMTABS DIRECTORY  : E:\tasm32\

##
## If your using a version of TASM that returns useless exit codes, set this to ON to ignore them.
##
IGNORE EXIT CODE    : off

##
## Changing this will break things.
##
TASM OPTIONS        : -65 -b -f00

All you need to change in this file is the TASM LOCATION line and the TASMTABS DIRECTORY line.

The TASM LOCATION line should be the full path for tasm.exe, including tasm.exe. For example you might need to change it to C:\tasm\tasm.exe

The TASMTABS DIRECTORY should just be the directory TASM is installed in, unless you moved things in there around. So you probably just need to change this to C:\tasm\

Once you have saved this configuration file, its time to test things out.

Change to the maxflash source code directory and type:

maxflash.pl

If Perl is not in your path, or the .pl file association is not set, you will get an error message that Windows cannot execute this file.

If there is an error in maxflash.cfg, you will get this error:

C:\maxflash>maxflash.pl

In maxflash.cfg: The TASMTABS directory specified "C:\tasm32\" does not exist!

But, if you have installed Perl ok, and Tasm OK, and configured the maxflash scripts ok, you will get this:

MAXFLASH Multicart Build/Utility Script - c2005 Steven J Tucker

C:\maxflash>

One final part to this step is to test the TASM assembler. You can test TASM by executing:

maxflash.pl -testbuild

If TASM is working correctly, you should see this output:

C:\maxflash>maxflash.pl -testbuild

MAXFLASH Multicart Build/Utility Script - c2005 Steven J Tucker
Information and updates at http://www.atarimax.com/

[Rebuild] Rebuild of mempack.com OK, file is 8192 bytes.
[Rebuild] Rebuild of exepmenu.com OK, file is 8192 bytes.
[Rebuild] Rebuild of exeunpak.com OK, file is 217 bytes.
[Rebuild] Rebuild of softdisk.com OK, file is 291 bytes.
[Rebuild] Rebuild of maxdisk.com OK, file is 8192 bytes.
[Rebuild] Rebuild of multidsk.com OK, file is 617 bytes.

C:\maxflash>

If you see that, everything is installed properly and you have been able to sucessfully do a test assembly of the maxflash source code.

Once thats done, we can move on to actually making you a multicart. :D

Ok, I'm running into a problem...
I did get the perl path set ok, and downloaded the maxflash, and edited the maxflash.cfg file to the right directory however...

When I type maxflash.pl, I get
"bad command or file name"

BUT
If I use Windows Explorer and double click the maxflash.pl file a dos window comes up and looks like the code does run, but the window closes too fast and I cant quite make it out...

Bear in mind I'm running Windows 98. I'll try setting things up on my laptop just for the hell of it to see if it works, but I wouldn't be able to use my laptop anyways since theres no serial port...

Try instead:

perl -- maxflash.pl

If windows wont recognize the .pl file association from the command line you will just have to prefix maxflash.pl with 'perl --' each time.

For example:

perl -- maxflash.pl -testbuild

Ok, we will make a simple multicart first.

I am attaching a file with Atari EXE games to this message, so we are working from the same page. Unzip those files to a new directory, say C:\exefiles

Now, go into the maxflash directory and do:

maxflash.pl -exepacker -8mb -flasher C:\exefiles

What these options mean:

-exepacker: Tells the build utility you want to make a multicart out of Atari EXE files.

-8mb: Tells the build utility you want to target an 8mbit flash cartridge. If you are using a 1mbit flash cartridge, change this to -1mb

-flasher: Tells the build utility to make you an ATR image of the multicart for programming your cartridge when its done creating it.

And of course the last item of the command is the directory where your EXE files are stored. It will try to clean/pack as many EXE files as possible onto your cartridge from this directory.

Once you execute the command you should see this if all goes well. The output is very long so I will break it up into parts.

Assembled 51 files with 2261 bytes of slack.

As the build utility processes and packs each EXE file, it will print the status and number of bytes remaining in the cartridge space. If an EXE file is corrupted or otherwise not useable, it will complain and ignore that file.

By default the names of the images that appear on the menu of the
flash cartridge will be the same as the files they were taken
from.

You can choose new menu descriptions here, or just
press Enter to keep what is shown (34 characters maximum).

Title    [action_biker_newexedump] : Action Biker
Title                   [AlleyCat] :
Title            [Archon II Adept] :

If you want to change the names of the programs on the multicart menu, you can enter the changes here, or just press ENTER for each file to keep the name in brackets.

Please enter a title for this cartridge.  This text will
appear at the top-most line of the multicart menu.  Just
press enter to keep the default description

Cartridge Title: [ATARIMAX Flash Multicart EXE Loader] :

Pretty self explanitory. :)

WARNING: You did not enter a destination filename for the raw binary.
WARNING: Using "untitled.bin" as the target image filename.

Saved new binary flash image to untitled.bin

At this point the build utility is actually done making the raw multicart binary. All the source files have been assembled, the target programs have been processed and packed, and the multicart BIN image has been saved to 'untitled.bin'.

You can basically ignore this file. If you want to test the multicart in Atari800Win, this is the cartridge file you would need to use.

Mapping unused rom banks...done.

The script is now processing the finished .bin file into an ATR you can use to program your cartridge. If you built a cart image that was not completely full, it will remove empty portions here so programming your cartridge is faster.

When you load the flash cartridge programming disk on the Atari Computer
it will display the title of the software to be programmed.  You can change
what is displayed, or just press ENTER to keep what is shown.  Note: you
may use a maximum of 34 characters in this field.

Title     [untitled] :

This is the title that will appear on the menu when you boot the flasher ATR image to program yur cartridge.

Saved new cartridge programming image to "untitled (maxflash image).atr"

The raw multicart binary untitled.bin has now been wrapped in the flashing program and is ready to use with APE or SIO2PC.

Just boot the "untitled (maxflash image).atr" image from drive #1 to progam your cartridge. :)
